preface to the second edition

Since 1969, when this book was first published as When Man and Manager Talk-A Casebook, there have been radical changes in our economy, our culture and our social values. Many of these changes have been good, and some, mainly those associated with improved opportunities for women and minority group members, were long overdue.

At least one change, however, brings cause for great concern. The productivity of our country has been slowing, while that of many other nations has been accelerating. This creates an urgent need for those involved in management to examine their practices, their use of resources, and their priorities.

It is not a time for glib speeches, management fads, and superficial thinking. This is a time for making the most of our successful experience, for applying proven techniques and for sharpening our skills. Whatever we do, we must maximize its effect and dredge from it the best it can contribute. There is no time and no money to do two things if one will suffice.

This book has been revised to reflect and deal with some of the major changes that have occurred in the last decade. It was before and it remains focused on personnel productivity, particularly that of the professional and managerial work force, which includes the technical innovators of our time and the "movers and shakers" of any organization. The sample dialogues provide models for managers and supervisors to use in ten essential discussions with employees. They deal with basics and display modern management principles in action. They show managers how to be productive as managers and how to establish the kind of relationship with employees that elicits their best contribution.
