We all know what a team is and can give several examples-a football team, a drill team, or a debate team. Most of us have even played on a team at least once in our lives. For example, I played on my high school football team. I still can remember the exhilaration we felt when it all clicked and we scored. In fact, most of us understand the potency of a successful team effort. However, most of us would be hard pressed to explain how to create and manage a successful team. Yet today that is the challenge being thrust upon American managers.

American businesses are underping sweeping changes in an effort to stay competitive in a global marketplace. One of the changes is the creation of self-managing work teams. Organizations such as General Foods, American University, New Society Publishers, and the City of Albuquerque have all redefined their work around the self-managing work team concept. Each of these organizations has had remarkable success with this new work environment. But what practicing managers need more than anecdotes about past successes is a clear set of techniques for implementing self-managing work teams.

I believe Clay Carr's book, Teampower, takes a giant step in that direction. Clay provides a clear set of skills that a manager needs to establish and maintain a self-managing work team environment. While this could be another dull management treatise, Clay's writing style keeps it both interesting and Un target.

It has been said that "knowledge is power" and that "the value of knowledge increases as it is shared." In his book, Clay has provided both power and value to all managers facing the challenge of selfmanaging work teams.
