| TITLE : BASIC BUSINESS MATHEMATICS: A LIFE-SKILLS APPROACH. |
PREFACE
There is an emerging knowledge economy which is impacting our country's global leadership. Countries such as Japan and West Germany have a higher mathematics and science proficiency than the United States. On a more personal level, each of us must become more numerate if we wish to succeed in the ever-changing technological environment. Knowledge permeates every aspect of our lives, because our knowledge translates into highly skilled jobs, higher wages, and a better quality of life.
This book was written to help the reader improve his or her basic mathematics skills using a self-study approach. The book follows this structure: the introduction to each concept is followed by examples, exercises, and answers to the exercises. In doing the ex'ercises, it is strongly recommended that the reader use a calculator. Calculators are commonly used throughout the business world.
The best way to learn mathematics is to solve problems! This book will enable you to improve your basic skills in a friendly, practical way. To paraphrase an ancient Chinese proverb: When I hear mathematics, I think about it; when I see mathematics, I remember it; when I do mathematics, I understand it.
This text uses mathematical knowledge and skills to solve problems that commonly occur in business and at home. We all encounter such life-skill problems as working with percentage, ratio, and proportion; paying sales tax; borrowing or investing money; being paid a commission; purchasing discounted products on sale; using credit cards; and so on. As educated people, we need to understand the mathematics used in these situations. We can't always rely on someone else to do our thinking for us.
When you have mastered the information in this text, you will be better prepared to use mathematics in your daily life.
