This book is written with the intention of providing guidelines to the layman and those deeply involved in stock market investment, the way that I see it should be done. In preparation for this book, I have gathered valuable materials from my experience as a listener, observer, player and as a student of stock market investment. From my experience, I have put together the technigues and advice which would be beneficial to those who want to be successful in stock market investment, especially in Malaysia.

The ability to pick good shares and avoid bad ones is obviously a crucial prerequisite for investors who intend to take part in the stock market. Unfortullately, all too often, investors enter the market without much preparation and knowledge. As a matter of fact, if a few basic principles are complied with, investment in shares can be as safe as any other forms of investment. It is a readily encashable form of investment unlike deposits in banks or investment in properties.

An investor must be eguipped with the essential know-how and confidence to begin investing in shares for both income and capital growth and be able to spot profitable opportunities that come along, to determine the right time to buy, sell or switch shares for maximum returns and the use of price earnings ratios to beat stock market averages.

Shares offer exciting possibilities for making money. They have become immensely popular as a form of investment as a result of the meagre interest rates bank deposits yield and the inflationary pressures on savings. I started out as someone interested in the ups and downs of the market, the psychological drive that moves the stock market, not just the one in Malaysia but also the world over. I then ventured into the academic side of exploring this behavioural pattem, which have resulted in various academic papers addressing this issue. Then I came to realise that the stock market is not only an academic exercise, it is more thall that. It is something that ordinary people sometimes become obsessed with, and something that the experts sometimes find very difficult to comprehend and explain. I then began to acquaint myself with the actual players of the stock market, listening to their worries and laughter. I looked at what drives them on in this highly volatile and hostile environment, and what mistakes they soften made. This book reflects my belief on what should be done to be successful in stock market investment. lt does not profess to be the last word on the philosoplly and theory of investmellt but rather a guide to investment in stocks and shares.
