PREFACE

I would like to think that this Handbook is unique, in a number of ways.

Firstly, unlike other books on Human Relations and Interpersonal Communication, this Handbook is ILLUSTRATED, designed to capture the reader's interest and to reinforce each message with a visual impact.

Another unique feature is that each page of material can be used independently as it contains either a complete idea or a subdivision of a main topic.

This Handbook is also different in another significant way. Not only does it explain, in simple everyday language, important basic concepts and principles underlying human behaviour, but it also goes further and provides illustrations of true-to-life situations and diffkulties in human relations, accompanied by actual examples of how to respond effectively in each situation.

The Handbook is organised into three inter related parts.

* Part One, HUMAN RELATIONS, deals with general concepts and fundamental principles underlying human behaviour, such as Human Needs, What Influences Human Behaviour, Levels of Human Behaviour, Johari Window, and Personal Space.

* Parit Two, ATTITUDES, emphasises the role and importance of attitudes in personal electiveness and interpersonal functioning, and includes topics like Self-Concept, Self- Fulfilling Prophecy Being Genuine, Letting Go, Looking For The Good in People, and Building Bridges.

* Part Three, COMMUNICATION, deals with the specifics and practical application of interpersonal communication skills, and covers Communication Process, Response Styles, Empathy Effective Feedback, and How to Handle Difficult Interpersonal Situations.

While each part of the Handbook, and even each page, can be read and used independently an appreciation of the first two Parts, namely Human Relations and Attitudes, will provide a firmer psychological foundation for the understanding and practical application of the Interpersonal Communication Skills covered in the third Part.
